The scavenger hunt that eats a surveyor’s day

Before you can retrace a boundary or tie into existing control, someone has to go find the monuments – the iron pins, the aluminum caps, the brass disks that anchor the work. Confirm they are still there. See what shape they are in. That is real, necessary field work, and on a spread-out job it is hours of it: GPS-navigating to record positions, walking fencerows, digging at a corner that may or may not still hold a pin.

Now look at who tends to do it. Often a licensed surveyor or a senior crew chief – because they are the one who knows what to look for, what a disturbed monument means, which pin is the controlling one. Which means the firm’s scarcest, most expensive, hardest-to-replace hours are being spent on a task whose difficult part, most of the time, is “drive to the right spot and take a good photograph.” The judgment comes later. The scavenger hunt comes first, and it is eating the exact hours the profession has the least of.

What needs a license, and what just needs a person on-site

There is a line here that is worth drawing carefully, because getting it wrong in either direction costs you.

Surveying is licensed work, and it stays licensed. The measurement, the decision about what a found monument means for a boundary, the retracement analysis, the certification – that is a licensed surveyor’s judgment, full stop. Nobody is suggesting otherwise, and any workflow that blurs it is a problem.

Reconnaissance is not surveying. Whether a monument is physically there, what it looks like, roughly where it sits, whether the area is accessible – that is field documentation. It informs the survey; it is not the survey. A capable person with a phone and clear instructions can gather it, and a licensed surveyor can make every professional judgment afterward, from the results.

The expensive mistake most firms make is not sending unlicensed people to survey – everyone knows better than that. It is the quieter one: making licensed people do the reconnaissance, because there was no clean way to split it off. The pin does not care who photographs it. The judgment about what the pin means is where the license earns its keep.
