The iPhone in the truck

Every mixed crew knows this moment. The party chief’s phone has the app. The helper’s phone – an iPhone – does not. So the photo gets taken on the helper’s phone anyway, texted to the chief, saved to a camera roll, and lost to the project record forever.

The gap was never about wanting a second app. It was that half the phones in the truck could not run the first one. PointScout Mobile launched on Android because that is where we could move fastest; the App Store review process finished this summer, and the iOS app is now live. Same app, same account, same project – whichever phone is closest to the work.

What it actually does

PointScout Mobile is the field side of the PointScout system, and it does four jobs:

Captures field observations. GPS points with a live accuracy readout on the collect screen – green when the fix is tight, red when it is not, so nobody records a guess without knowing it is a guess. Photos and notes attach to the point, geotagged and timestamped, so the observation carries its own context back to the office.

Shows the crew what the office knows. Survey points published from PointScout Desktop appear on the phone’s map, read-only. The crew can see the control, the found corners, the boundary – without being able to fat-finger any of it. A helper with that map can walk to a monument that would otherwise take a radio call and twenty minutes of description.

Moves data without babysitting. Everything captured in the field queues locally and syncs when the phone has signal again – offline-first, because the best corridors have the worst coverage. Back at the office, the desktop pulls the crew’s field points and photos for finish processing. No cables, no card readers, no “did you email me that?”

Carries the collector’s export when that is useful. If the crew needs the day’s PNEZD file to reach the office before the crew does, the phone can take it off a thumb drive and send it through the cloud. Which brings up the thing PointScout Mobile deliberately does not do.

What it deliberately does not do

PointScout Mobile never connects to your data collector or your instrument. No Bluetooth pairing, no cables, no drivers. Your collector keeps doing exactly what it does today, under whatever warranty and workflow it came with – PointScout reads the standard PNEZD file it exports, and that is the whole relationship.

That is a design choice, not a limitation. The gear on your tripod is expensive, calibrated, and trusted. A phone app that wants to get between it and your workflow is a phone app that can break your workflow. PointScout sits beside the instrument, not inside it: the phone documents the work; the collector measures it. (Surveyors are right to be picky about that line – a photo with a phone-GPS tag is context, and the measurement is still the measurement.)

Free forever is the strategy, not a promotion

PointScout Mobile costs nothing, for unlimited seats, permanently. Put it on the chief’s phone, the helper’s phone, the summer intern’s phone.

We can say that plainly because the business does not need the field app to make money – it needs the field app to be everywhere the work happens. The paid tools live in the office: PointScout Desktop for finish work, FieldIntel for the archive, LandLedger for right-of-way projects. The phone in the field is how the day’s work arrives clean, and a per-seat price on it would only ration the thing that makes everything downstream better.

So: unlimited seats. The whole crew, both platforms, zero dollars.
